Can Blau 2007 Red Wine

Can Blau 2007 Red Wine
Montsant, Spain

Today’s offering is from Montsant, which is in northeast Spain and surrounds the famous wine region known as Priorat. Montsant’s landscape is very dramatic and comprises many steep slopes penetrated by an arid climate. The small amount of annual rainfall combined with the poor soil force the region’s old vines to struggle to produce abundant yields; the grapes that do survive are well concentrated. Can Blau blends three different grape varietals (Mazuelo, Syrah, and Garnacha), from three distinctive microclimates from within Montsant. This process produces a wine of great depth and character.

Here is the latest Wine Advocate review:

“The 2007 Can Blau is purple-colored with a nose of cedar, mineral, baking spices, blueberry, and black cherry. This leads to a full-bodied wine with layers of flavor, enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years, and a pure, fruit-filled finish. It will be at its peak from 2010 to 2018.”

90+ points, Wine Advocate

If you are looking for a wine that has similarities to Priorat with a price tag that is less than half the price of the wines of Priorat, you will arrive at the wines of Montsant. They are incredibility rich and layered and are great with the comfort foods of fall, such as lamb stew. We think the 2007 Can Blau is drinking atypically very well right now for its young age (usually it takes some bottle age to round out). That said, it is also a wine that will last an easy five years in the cellar.
